Workplace Wellbeing.

I’m designing and developing integrated systems that provide just-in-time and personalized wellbeing interventions to help information workers find their wellbeing balance.

Problem.

Workplace stress in our modern society has been quickly increasing during the last few decades which has only worsened by the unique demands imposed by the COVID-19 pandemic and remote/hybrid work settings. Coupled with the blurring of work-life boundaries, these conditions are detrimental to the mental health and wellness of workers and lead to huge business costs in loss of productivity and medical costs around the world.

Multi-disciplinary approach.

Understanding workplace stress require a solid foundation in psychology. But because of the pervasiveness of technologies in our everyday lives, we cannot ignore the role of socio-technical systems in our understanding of stress. In addition, computing can be a powerful tool in enabling high-fidelity understanding of stress that has never been done before. This is why we need a multi-disciplinary approach, including expertise in human-computer interaction, machine learning, and psychology.

Sensing.

We are creating new sensing methods that privately and comfortably capture relevant physiological, emotional, and behavioral information about a person to understand their stress manifestation and progression.

Intervention.

We are designing and developing interventions aimed at helping people find time to take care of themselves. We’re evaluating different types of modalities of support, taking into account individual’s contextual information, self-reflection and preferences.

Human-AI collaboration.

We are designing meaningful interactions between the system and the human to give people control and agency over their own data and their wellbeing. We’re designing spaces for self-reflection and feedback so that the system can be an effective tool for improving their wellbeing.

Ethics.

We are defining appropriate uses of AI in the context of wellbeing to ensure our understanding of risks of potential harm, to design adequate mitigation of those risks, and to maximize privacy while gaining trust.
